I agree that it is kind of petty, but I'm not sure how much of a violation of the Deadhead code it is. I've read where it's supposed to be okay to sell tapes at a price one could expect to get for blanks. At $100 for 600 tapes, this guy's only getting 16 cents per!

Point well taken. Cost of blanks is common--or send the blanks and have them returned recorded.

If you guys want to gt uppity, AND you want to put your money where your indignation is, I suggest you start here:

and so on.

Ebay sells tons of boots daily. This is where Kidd bought the cds that he took to the meeting at which DP was born.

C'mon. how many of you ever bought a bootleg disc or c.d.?

I did. I'm not sweating the band's losses here. Their losses are due to poor business decisions and poor management.

What pisses me off is the negative vibes of the bootleggers. It is a black mark on the honor system when boots appear from Charlie Miller dls--black mark on a black sheep lurking in the community, and a black mark against the clearly stated wishes of the GD AND Mr. Miller.

Immoral to sell or boot? Damn right. Against the fabric of the tribe? Damn right. Going to contact ebay and finger all the bootlegs for them to be removed? Are you?

Sometimes I do email Ebay to inform them that certain sellers are bootleggers. But more fun is emailing the bidders and pointing them to the dl sites the bootleggers got their stuff from.

Try it sometime. If you aren't part of the solution, you a part of the problem.

B.T.W.--what do you think about Craigslist carrying adverts for prostitutes?

The second GD purchase I ever made was a bootleg LP recorded at my first show. Before I hooked up with someone in college who had a tape collection, I bought a number of different boots. Even though I understood the implications, I still took advantage of the availability of that stuff. I guess that makes me a bad person. I just wish I could say that buying those records was the worst thing I ever did.

I'm trying to do better, though.

I don't think that it makes you a "bad" person at all, Bryan.
I remember at Gaelic Park that I bought the infamous "Mammary Productions" boot from Winterland 1970. I loved that thing.

I doubt that we stop and think when buying a boot--and I doubt that it really hurts the band (maybe 500 copies are pressed of some of these, and then they get "liberated"). I do feel that one either condones or condemns this practice. (Or, I suppose, doesn't give a shit). I cannot condemn what I have been a part of (I cannot cast the first stone), but if this sort of profiteering bothers anyone--for whatever reason--then be proactive.

I don't buy boots anymore and haven't for years---after all, why buy the cow when the milk's free? of course, the same argument is made viz Dead.net's releases. Why buy 2-19-71 if you already have a nice copy?

Ah, moral dilemmas--where would we be without them????

They still don't like it unless you erase the music before you sell the used tapes. All you need is a magnet to do that easily. I have one that you slide the cassettes thru a slot like a credit card. GoodBye music...

we used to send blanks and return postage to our brothers who generously made copies for us if we didn't have much worthwhile in the way of other shows to trade, and in some cases it was easier to just send money to cover the expenses (i even remember someone sending me back the receipts and change along with the tapes)

if i follow your logic Cousin, would it be ok if a tape is first erased, paid for, and only then re-recorded with the same show for free??...although i think you may have a point in that once a used tape is erased, it may not have any value whatsoever...as in the motto of days long past, "anything worth recording deserves to be recorded on a fresh new tape"

good thread

Amen man. I still trade CDs for new blanks and don't get involved with money changing hands. What somebody pays for blanks and what I paid for mine is nobody's business. and by the book as far as GDM is concerned.

Been known to burn a CD and then get high with a friend because one of us had some weed on that day...

i dont even get the cd's for blanks - the friggin things are so cheap now - why even bother - what comes around goes around -

so i spend $4- $10 bucks in blanks and postage to make someone happy - i get the same back in return - and usually from someone else who i never sent to.

i fuckin hate someone who has a show and says send me the blanks first and then i'll mail you the show (with one simple personal exception which was a massive mailing)

that is bullshit and cheap
